Q & A's
Why should I buy a leather coat?
Research and years of common use have made it clear that leather is one of the strongest and most durable materials produced for garments. A quality leather coat is a smart investment. The average life of a leather coat will outlast fabric coats by many years. If you are looking for a long term solution for style, strength, warmth, convenience and character, you can never go wrong with an Andrew Marc leather coat.
How long is my jacket expected to last?
Depending on use, with preventative maintenance and proper care a leather jacket can last indefinitely. Just ask any Andrew Marc customer, because Andrew Marc selects the skins and fabrics from the finest tanneries and mills around the world. Your Andrew Marc coat is designed for longevity and durability.
How can I preserve my leather coat?
Like most material including leather, suede, nubuck and shearling, the skins can absorb and retain dirt if not treated or protected early on. Before wearing your new Andrew Marc leather coat, we suggest applying a protective spray such as the Andrew Marc TLC Rain & Stain protector. This will assist in guarding against light rain or snow by allowing small drops of water to roll off without penetrating the leather. (Always use a spray that does not contain silicone as this will attract more dirt and make it difficult to maintain your coat).
Remember, a protective spray is not a complete water proofing solution, rather a repellent to protect against "light" rain. If you are caught in a rain or snowstorm we recommend the following steps. First find a place to let your jacket completely dry. Lay out your jacket so that it will not lose its unique form. Once completely dried, apply a conditioner such as the Andrew Marc TLC Leather Balm to restore the natural oils. Let completely dry again. Finally, re-apply the protective spray.
How can I preserve my suede or Nubuck coat?
Suede and nubuck materials although strong, durable and reliable, are very delicate in nature. The temperament of these skins are of an "absorbing" character and make it essential to protect and care for these two (2) types of coats correctly and consistently. If maintained properly, your suede and nubuck Andrew Marc coat can last a lifetime. Make sure to use protective repellent spray such as the Andrew Marc TLC Rain & Stain. We recommend softly brushing around the collar and cuffs to loosen oil and dirt, and raise the nap once a month while in the season you are wearing.
How long between cleaning?
Leather coats are usually seasonal, so depending on how often you wear your coat, we recommend the following cleaning schedule. If you can’t live without your Andrew Marc leather coat, we suggest cleaning and polishing with Andrew Marc TLC Leather Balm every 2 months and use the Andrew Marc TLC Rain & Stain protectant every 4 weeks. If your life goes on without your Andrew Marc coat, you can clean and polish once in the beginning of the season and once at the end of the season. Apply the protecting spray every 2 months.
Is there such a thing as over cleaning my leather garments?
As with all things in life, keep in line with moderation. Maintaining the fresh quality and original look of your coat is important. Don’t over apply the chemicals and treatments recommended. Always test a small panel of your garment before applying any conditioner or spray. Use proper ventilation when applying aerosol.
How do you treat stains n leather or suede?
If by chance you happen to drop your great grandmother’s secret tomato sauce recipe or that delicious olive oil basil dressing on your new Andrew Marc hot leather pants, NEVER rub. Always blot dry. Rub the suede with a cloth to restore some of its texture. You can remove the dry stains and marks from suede by softly rubbing a pencil eraser on the affected area. Brush with a suede brush. Apply a small amount of white vinegar to a damp towel as a last resort. Gently rub the surface with the cloth, then allow it to dry. We recommend stains on leather and suede to be professionally treated. You may not be able to remove a stain completely.
How should I store my leather garments over the summer?
Your new Andrew Marc leather coat should be stored on a padded or wooden hanger to preserve the shape of the coat. NEVER store your leather coat in plastic – Leather as a material needs air to prevent it from drying out. We suggest storing your Andrew Marc leather coat in a breathable garment bag.
Where can I service my jacket?
Andrew Marc TLC has an in-house service division that performs a number of different services for your garments. From polishing and cleaning, to re-lining your coat, we do it all for you. We will even guarantee our repairs, buttons and zippers for one year and relining for two years. If you don’t want to send us your jacket, you can bring it to your local dry cleaning shop. Make sure they know how to handle leather.
